General Clarifications

Submissions for the ‘built’ projects must be completed in the timeframes noted within the Category clarification section below. Projects must not have been submitted previously within the same category, unless it was previously ‘unbuilt’ and is now ‘built’

For the purposes of the Awards ‘local’ is defined as being within a 25-kilometer radius of Manchester City Centre (measured from Central Library).

Category Clarifications

  1. Commercial – Built
    (Offices, retail,  bars, hotels, industrial, competed between April 2022 and April 2024)
  1. Commercial – Unbuilt
    (Offices, retail,  bars, hotels, industrial unbuilt.)
  1. Private House – Built
    (Residential house (single), category also includes extensions and remodelling completed between May 2023 and May 2024)
  1. Private House – Unbuilt
    (Residential house (single), category also includes extensions and remodelling unbuilt)
  1. Multi Residential – Built
    (Multiple housing developments, apartments, high-rise residential completed between April 2022 and April 2024)
  1. Multi Residential – Unbuilt
    (Multiple housing developments, apartments, high-rise residential unbuilt)
  1. Retrofit & Reuse
    (A building of any use which positively upgrades the existing building to meet physical and environmental conditions)
  1. Small Project
    Completed projects with a contract value of £350,000 and under.
    From home extensions to workplaces, shop fitouts, pavilions to small houses, interventions. Award which recognises good design realised at a more modest cost.
  1. Community – Built
    Buildings which enhance the local community; community centre, schools, theatres, transport projects, sports, museums, cinemas, religious buildings, art galleries, health centres & hospitals completed between April 2022 and April 2024.
  1. Community – Unbuilt
    Buildings which enhance the local community; community centre, schools, theatres, transport projects, sports, museums, cinemas, religious buildings, art galleries, health centres & hospitals unbuilt.
  1. Future Architect – Student Award
    All student entries are free of charge. All entries will be displayed digitally on the awards evening. The MSA committee will shortlist 12no entries to be shortlisted and printed for display and judging on the evening of the awards.

Submission Requirements

  1. 1 × A1 Landscape A1 Presentation Board which contains:
    1. Photographs/renders of the proposals
    2. Site layout/context plan
    3. Short statement explaining the project
    4. Please note, this board will be for judging purposes and presented on the evening of the awards
  2. 1 × A3 Project Description Sheet
    1. This will not be presented on the evening but used for judging purposes alongside the A1 board
    2. Supplementary project drawings/photos sketches
    3. Max 500 word statement (optional)
  3. 1 × High Resolution jpeg image
    1. A high resolution project image which will be used for the rolling presentation display on the evening of the awards.

File Naming

Please could all files for upload be named as the following:

[Category Number]_[Project Title]_[Architect Practice]_[Submission Document]
